The Coding School

CodeConnects is the online learning initiative of The Coding School, a 501(c)(3) organization that aims to empower the next generation through computer science education. Founded by a Brown University undergraduate in 2014, The Coding School has grown into an international organization with 800+ instructors and students from over 125 countries participating in our programs. To ensure our programming and teaching is of the highest quality, we are sponsored by IBM Quantum and Google AI and we are partnered with higher educational institutions, including: UCLA, University of Maryland, Columbia University Data Science Institute, Brown University, and Villanova University.

Our Founder

Kiera Peltz is on a mission to train the next generation for the jobs of the future today. She began learning how to code while she was working on the White House's Innovation & Technology team. She is a Gates-Cambridge and Schwarzman Scholar, receiving master's degrees from the University of Cambridge and Tsinghua University in Sociology and Economics & Business, respectively. Kiera graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a double major in Political Science and Happiness, an independent major she designed that focuses on the interdisciplinary study of happy societies.

Our Coding Philosophy

At The Coding School, we believe...

1

Coding is the key to social mobility.

There is no skill more important in the 21st century than coding. It’s the way the world operates, and those who know how to do it, will have the competitive edge. That’s why we’re dedicated to ensuring coding is accessible to all students including geographically and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities.

2

Coding empowers students with special needs to thrive.

We’ve found students with special needs flourish in their academics across the board with the introduction of coding education, and that they are particularly gifted in this field. codeConnects was in part developed with these findings in mind as it provides the ideal learning environment needed for students who need extra support.

3

There is no one-size-fits-all to coding education.

Female identifying individuals and minorities remain significantly underrepresented in the field of computer science. codeConnects overcomes the structural and systemic barriers that prevent underrepresented groups from pursuing computer science by providing nontraditional teaching methods that engage, empower and inspire individuals who are typically left behind.

4

Real coding education is a marathon, not a sprint.

We’ve developed a multi-year curriculum to ensure students aren’t just introduced to the world of computer science but that they have the support and guidance to develop their coding skills with years of mentorship and personalized lessons.

Our Goals

Accessibility is not limited to the physical presence of coding instruction; even where
coding education is available, it doesn’t always mean it’s a learning environment where the student can thrive.

Geographic Accessibility

Structural Accessibility

Socioeconomic Accessibility

Coding classes -- where offered -- are often tuition based, making it impossible for low-income students to attend these courses. With so many inherent barriers to coding education, money should not be one of them. We’re dedicated to providing scholarships to students with financial need who wouldn’t have lessons otherwise.

The field of computer science lacks diversity, leaving minorities, female identifying, LGBTQ, and special needs students, significantly underrepresented. This is largely due structural and systemic barriers in traditional education environments. codeConnects is the only program of its kind reimagining coding education & ensuring these structural barriers are overcome.
